Read the following passage and answer that follows:                           (1×5=5)
            The regions controlled by these kingdoms were very large. This required that the kingdom be divided into smaller units in order to ensure better and smoother administration. Thus, the kingdom was divided into provinces, provinces were divided into districts and districts were, further divided into groups of villages.  The king was the supreme power in the kingdom. He adopted titles like Vlaharaiadhirai and Fibhuvana-Chakrava/tin and ruled from the capital city, controlling the regions around it directly with the help of a council of ministers. Due to the means of transport, Tegions beyond the capitals had to be governed by influential families of samantas. The post of a samanta was often hereditary. They collected revenue and maintained armies for the king. This made them very powerful in the regions beyond the capital. To control the samanfa, the king would ask him to attend his court regularly. Often leave their sons behind in the capital city close to the king. The ‘king had to depend on the samantas and the various associations of the peasants, traders, and Brahmins to help him run his kingdom. In each of these divisions, the peasants, cattle-keepers, and artisans had to give a part of their produce as taxes. The traders also had to give Q part of their income as tax. The tax was collected as rent for using the land the king owned and for being provided protection from invaders by the king’s army. This tax was also used by the king to maintain his own establishment. It was also used for the construction of temples and forts, for maintaining the army to protect the kingdom from invasions, to attack neighboring kingdoms for wealth and to capture trade routes.
